7th grade Advanced Science students in Mrs. Scott’s class became engineers and scientists as they built their own electromagnets!
Students wrapped wire around an iron nail and connected it to a battery to create a magnetic field. They then tested the strength of their electromagnets by seeing how many paper clips they could pick up. To make it a true scientific investigation, students changed variables such as the number of wire coils and recorded their results in a data table.
By the end of the experiment, students were able to see firsthand how electricity and magnetism work together to create an electromagnet. It was exciting to watch their designs get stronger as they added more coils and refined their investigations!

In Mrs. Scott’s 8th Grade Physical Science class, students became the data behind the graphs!
During their “Walk the Line: Relating Distance and Time” lab, students used a motion sensor and data collection device to recreate different position vs. time graphs by physically moving.
Students worked in groups to:
• Walk toward and away from the motion sensor
• Change their speed or stop completely
• Match their movements to specific graphs
• Observe how motion creates real-time data
By experimenting with their movement, students learned how distance, time, speed, and direction affect the shape and slope of graphs. They discovered that a straight line shows constant motion, a flat line shows no movement, and curved lines show changes in speed!
